Greengate public realm scheme approved

Salford and Manchester city councils have granted planning permission for the delivery of phase one of the Greengate public realm scheme worth £10.4 million.
 
Greengate is the 13 hectare area of brownfield land, which includes Salford’s historic core around the crossing of the River Irwell and the area to the north of the Greengate viaduct around the junction of Greengate and Gravel Lane. Approvals for the scheme were given the green light by Manchester City Council on November 9 following Salford City Council approval in July this year. read more

MediaCityUK moves at high speed

Businesses and residents at the new MediaCityUK development at Salford Quays will be connected to one of the most advanced communications networks in the world when the first phase of the £500 million complex is completed in 2011.
 
Developer Peel Media awarded a multi-million pound, five-year communications and IT contract to BT Business, the division of BT Retail that serves the UK’s small and medium-sized businesses, on December 7. BT starts network installation later this year. read more

Walkable streets programme underway

The first phase of Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company's Green and Walkable Streets Programme is now underway. Work on Chapel Street is expected to be completed in Spring 2010.
 
The work will focus on creating a greener and more pleasant environment with new street furniture and public art, tree and shrub management and overall improvements to the area. read more

Chapel Street gets creative

Salford's claim to be a hub for creative industries is strengthening, with Chapel Street venue The Black Lion launching a new monthly music night "Just Press Play".
 
The Black Lion re-opened in September, having closed in June after 230 years as a Salford fixture. It is now operated by Un-convention, which also recently moved to Chapel Street. read more

£10.4m plan to smarten up Greengate gets approval

Salford and Manchester city councils have given planning approval for the first part of the £10.4m Greengate public realm scheme. (Sourced from Crains.)
 
It covers a 13 hectare brownfield site on the Salford/Manchester border from Deansgate, over the River Irwell, down Victoria Street and Victoria Bridge Street in Salford.
 
The two councils say the site will provide public open space for events such as markets and concerts. The area will be lit by columns, beacons and ground lighting to make it safe and welcoming. read more
