The plan for a new store forms part of a massive regeneration scheme for the area which the public can view for the first time next week.
But the good news on the jobs front has been tempered by the announcement that more than 325 jobs could be axed after the shock news that Clifton firm Pilkington Tiles has gone into receivership.
The 81,000 sq ft Tesco store will be built on land next to Salford Shopping City, off Pendleton Way. Part of the site will be freed up at the end of the summer when St James’ RC Primary School closes.
The Tesco proposals include a store built on stilts and will also have 780 car parking spaces underneath. Half of the jobs will also be reserved for the long-term unemployed in the area as part of Tesco’s Regeneration Partnership.
Tesco spokesperson Matthew Magee said: "The creation of 650 jobs for local people, as well as great shopping for residents, are just two of the benefits that this proposal will bring."
