Local authorities in the North West have signed up to the Atlantic Gateway regeneration framework, described as "a vision for a sustainable economic zone" linking Liverpool and Greater Manchester along the Manchester Ship Canal corridor.
Leaders of local authorities in Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester met at Daresbury Science and Innovation Centre to sign an agreement to co-operate on the plans.
According to Crains, Manchester City Council is opposed to the initiative and stayed away from the launch, but it was attended by senior representatives of Salford City Council, Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, Liverpool City Council, Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council, Halton Borough Council and Warrington Borough Council.
The event was hosted by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, which said the plans could deliver 250,000 new jobs and 400,000 new homes by 2030 and would establish an area of economic growth second only to London in the UK.
The concept will be included in the forthcoming Integrated Regional Strategy, due to be published soon by the NWDA. This means the framework will have an influence on planning decisions about housing and transport schemes.
