Salford City Council's cabinet has approved plans for a joint venture company with Peel Holdings to deliver a new 15,000-seat community stadium for Salford City Reds Rugby league team.
The £26 million project in Barton involves Peel and Salford City Council pooling their land-holdings on the 70-acre site.
Outline planning permission for the land had already been granted for a stadium and retail use and a detailed application is expected by the end of May.
A delivery date of December 2011 has been agreed in order to meet the necessary deadlines for the Reds' bid to renew their Super League licence from February 2012.
The joint venture company would manage the stadium, with the Reds having a licence to use it.
