Islington Mill, a warehouse dedicated to the arts in Salford’s Chapel Street district, has been awarded £100,000 to improve its event, gallery and performance space.
Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company (CSURC), through Salford City Council and Arts Council England, have invested in Islington Mill, which provides work space for the creative industries and is home to more than 50 creative entrepreneurs, a gallery space and recording studio.
The first phase of improvement work is due to begin in May and will see public access improvements on the ground floor as well as the creation of an improved performance, event and gallery space for the public.
It is intended that the renovations will enable the Mill to increase event and audience numbers, and provide more opportunities for local and visiting artists.
Bill Campbell acquired the property in 2001. Since then his guiding philosophy has been to manage a creative hub which facilitates innovation, ideas and experimentation within the creative sector.
This has been supported by Islington Mill Arts Club, an association of artists and creative practitioners based in and around the Mill, which Campbell co-founded with Mark Carlin to carry forward its long-term development.
