£10.4m plan to smarten up Greengate gets approval

Published: 2009-12-02 15:45:48

Salford and Manchester city councils have given planning approval for the first part of the £10.4m Greengate public realm scheme. (Sourced from Crains.)

It covers a 13 hectare brownfield site on the Salford/Manchester border from Deansgate, over the River Irwell, down Victoria Street and Victoria Bridge Street in Salford.

The two councils say the site will provide public open space for events such as markets and concerts. The area will be lit by columns, beacons and ground lighting to make it safe and welcoming.

The project, designed by Whitelaw Turkington and Arup and funded with £8.5m from the Homes and Communities Agency, will include a pedestrian bridge linking the cities of Salford and Manchester; The Urban Cove, a multi-use public space featuring water and bordered by amphitheatre style seating and extensive tree planting; and The link, a linear space to encourage movement northwards from the end of the bridge into the future Greengate square.

The Greengate scheme is being led by Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company and will be delivered in partnership with development partners Ask Developments and Network Rail.
