Greengate public space designs approved

Published: 2009-11-27 08:29:14

Whitelaw Turkington and Arup have had designs approved for two new public spaces at Greengate in Central Salford. (Sourced from Architects' Journal.)

These new spaces will link Manchester Cathedral Quarter with a new 13-hectare, mixed-use development. A new public square, animated by water features and sculptural Beacon Towers, together with a new bridge across the River Irwell are all part of a unique public realm design that will establish Greengate as a new city centre destination.

Just minutes from Victoria Station and the commercial heart of Manchester, Greengate will be home to 2,500 residential units and over 85,000m² of commercial floor space. Greengate is expected to attract over £580m of private sector investment.

The public realm team submitted a planning application in March 2009 with work on the ground starting in 2010. The project is being delivered by Central Salford URC and Salford City Council, working alongside its development partner, ASK Developments.
