New lease of life for Lads Club

Published: 2009-09-17 15:46:51

Salford Lads Club was made famous by its association with pop group The Smiths. But last week it played host to a rather different musical outfit, the BBC Philharmonic string quartet, which marked the opening of the club's restored concert hall.

Back in January, Central Salford URC donated £85,000 to the refurbishment of the Lads Club’s Edwardian concert hall, which has been serving the local community since its opening in 1903.

"Salford Lads Club is a fine example of Edwardian architecture and has been a focus for the community in Salford for more than a century," said Central Salford URC chief executive Chris Farrow.

"This event is a celebration of the completion of the concert hall and the relocation of the BBC Philharmonic to Salford. This was a great occasion and we were proud to support it."

The BBC Philharmonic is one of several BBC units heading north as part of the corporation’s move to the city. The concert on September 13th was accompanied by an exhibition of the photography of Stephen Wright, whose iconic pictures of The Smiths outside the Salford Lads Club brought the building to national attention.
